Few places make learning to scuba dive as easy and rewarding as Fiji. Warm water, gentle currents and reefs bursting with colour mean you can go from never having dived before to exploring a coral garden in just a few days.

Here at Plantation Island Resort, we partner with Subsurface Fiji, a multi-award winning PADI 5-Star dive operator that has been running trips in the Mamanucas since 1988. If you’ve never put on a mask before and want to give diving a go on your next holiday, this guide covers everything you need to know to get started.

Why Fiji is One of the World’s Best Destinations for Beginner Scuba Divers

Fiji is often called the “Soft Coral Capital of the World” and for good reason. The conditions here are tailor-made for new divers:

  • Warm water year-round, ranging from 25 to 30 degrees, so there’s no need for thick wetsuits
  • Excellent visibility, typically between 15 and 25 metres
  • Calm, protected lagoons around the Mamanuca Islands that take the nerves out of your first dives
  • Short boat rides to dive sites, meaning more time underwater and less time travelling
  • PADI-certified instructors trained to guide first-timers every step of the way

You’re in safe, expert hands from the moment you step on the boat. The Subsurface team has spent decades teaching first-time divers in these exact waters, so they know how to make the experience feel manageable, fun and completely worth it.

What You Can Expect to See When Scuba Diving in Fiji

The Mamanuca reefs are alive with colour and movement. Even on a beginner dive, you’ll likely spot a huge variety of tropical marine life, including:

  • Clownfish darting through anemones
  • Parrotfish nibbling on coral
  • Butterflyfish, angelfish and surgeonfish in every shade imaginable
  • Reef sharks, including blacktips and whitetips
  • Sea turtles gliding past the reef
  • Dolphins on the ocean side of the barrier reef
  • Vibrant soft corals, sea fans and giant clams

For more experienced divers, Fiji also offers some incredible deeper experiences, including the Salamanda Shipwreck. These sites are best suited to advanced divers, so they’re a great reason to keep progressing once you’ve earned your first qualification.

The Best Dive Sites Near Plantation Island Resort

Subsurface Fiji runs trips to 44 dive sites across the Mamanucas, with options to suit every experience level. A few of the standouts:

  • Supermarket, just 10 kilometres from the resort, is an exciting shark encounter dive with grey, whitetip and blacktip reef sharks
  • Coral Gardens is a shallow reef dive packed with corals and reef fish, located near Namotu Island
  • Plantation Pinnacle features three deep-water pinnacles with swim-throughs, plus a clownfish garden on top
  • Salamanda Shipwreck is an advanced dive on a 40-metre decommissioned cruise ship covered in soft corals
  • Tavarua Wall sits at the edge of a 1,000-metre drop-off with visibility often reaching 25 to 50 metres
  • Mushroom Reef suits both beginners and seasoned divers, with fan corals, mushroom corals and anemones

Beginners are taken to gentle, shallow sites with easy conditions. Certified divers can request deeper reefs, wrecks and pinnacle dives. Most sites are within a 30 minute boat ride from the resort, so you’ll be in the water quickly and back in time for lunch.

Why Plantation Island Resort is the Ideal Base for Your Adventure

Group of scuba divers exploring the Mamanuca Islands in Fiji

The Subsurface dive shop sits right next to our Arrivals Jetty, with boats departing twice daily for the surrounding reefs. It’s about as close to the water as a dive base can get.

A few things that make us a great base for divers:

  • Daily dive trips departing at 8:30am (two-tank) and 2pm (single-tank)
  • Easy access to 44 dive sites in the Mamanucas
  • Plenty for non-divers in your group, including complimentary snorkelling, kayaking, stand-up paddleboarding, the Coconut Kids Club and our 9-hole golf course
  • Multiple restaurants and bars on-site to refuel between dives

We see a lot of families and couples where one person dives and another doesn’t, and Plantation Island Resort is set up for exactly that. While one of you is out on a morning dive trip, the rest of the group can be paddleboarding in the lagoon, lining up a tee time, or settling in by the pool with a cold drink.

From the moment you step off the ferry, you’re set up for time on the water. There’s no extra travel, no hunting around for a dive operator, no wasted holiday hours. Everything is already here, waiting.

Plan Your Scuba Diving Holiday

The dry season between May and October is generally the best time to dive in Fiji, with calmer seas and clearer visibility. Diving runs year-round in the Mamanucas, though, so you’ll have great conditions any time you visit.

It’s worth getting in touch with our reservations team before you arrive so we can help you line everything up. If you’re booking your first Discover Scuba session or PADI Open Water Course, please contact the Subsurface team so they can talk you through the requirements, and let you know what to expect on each day of the course.

There’s nothing quite like the first time you breathe underwater and watch a school of fish drift past. Plantation Island Resort is one of the best places in the world to make that memory happen, and we’d love to have you out here to experience it.
